When your standing 160 yards from the tee it is very useful to know what the average golf club distances are and what your own distances with each club are. I have had a hunt around for the tour averages and spent time with a number of golfers with handicaps from 3 through to 28 in the past few weeks to build up their average distances as well.

Now the above are based on a number of things, firstly the Pro yards are an average from the PGA and European Tour professionals, when you put the 2008 average into this the top 3 averages on the PGA Tour are currently between 325 and 335 yards meaning that technology and the overall game are increasing distances (and to add to this Tiger Woods hasn’t played in 2008 yet!) The Low Cap and High Cap players are based on time on the driving range watching closely how different players approach the game.

These are Golf Club Distances as an average and I know that people will be looking to get an exact science out of it but unfortunately it depends on a million different factors and is impossible to tell someone off the cuff how far they will hit their 3 wood. We hope it gives you a rough idea of what to expect from your clubs.

  1. Bob Brancato Said,

I suppose the skulled 9 iron that I hit 190 yds. was an aberration? Regards, Bob.

  2. Jim Newell Said,

Best way is hit the driving range and keep an average of your own shots, or pace them off on the course. I know my distances pretty weel and don’t have to guess much.

  3. Joe Saia Said,

Hmm..Im a pretty new player myself(19 yr old, playing to please father), and it may have been judged incorrectly, but Im wondering, since my instructor said I hit a 5 wood 220 yds, what are the chances he was BS’ing me..(obviously its sparked my interest in golf.)

  4. Swinger Said,

    Hi Joe
These are just guide lines to what a club should hit, if you are hitting a 5 wood 220yds, this would not be a ploy to get you interested in golf. I know a friend of mine is hitting his 4 iron an average of 230 yards yet can only get 215 out of his 3 iron. There are so many factors involved, age, how supple you are and how fast you swing the club just a few.

The fact you are 19 has me thinking that you are in good shape and capable of hitting a long way, don’t feel that you are being judged incorrectly it is all possible in golf.

    Hope this helps,

  5. Mike Said,

Recently I played in a golf tournament and was hitting my pitching wedge 130-140, my 9 iron 150, and my 8 iron 160 but the distances didnt translate into my other clubs as I was still only hitting my 5 wood 200-220 and my driver about 240
