How to Hit a Golf Ball through its Equator

Yesterday while I was out on the course I saw a number of people playing really bad shots because they approach the ball in the wrong way. Knowing how to hit a golf ball doesn’t mean that you can hit it perfectly every time, even Tiger Woods can’t do this so there is no way that you or I can manage to do this.

One of the things that is important to remember is that you are trying to push the ball forward. Having the equipment to hand, the club and the ball, you have 80% of what you need to answer the question. The rest is your swing and what you have in your mind when you are making your swing.

Your club has the loft that you want to take the ball on its trajectory, the ball is designed to go the distance you just have to add the science and hit the ball in the right place. Todays clubs make things a lot easier by having a larger area that you can strike the ball with that will give you a straight hit, this is called the sweet spot.

If you hit the ball on the sweet spot of the club and you strike the back of the golf ball (through the equator) then you will see your ball go off in the direction that you aimed it. If you hit down on the ball (top it) or get too much under the ball you will see completely different results. If you top it you will see your ball bounce not far from your feet and stop moving not very far away. If you hit the ball from too far down (get under it) then you will see a lot of height from the ball but very little in the way of distance, bit of a waste really.

Knowing how to hit a golf ball correctly is a great way to reduce the number of shots that you take each round, but actually getting it right more times than you get it wrong takes concentration and practice, practice practice.
