Putting amounts to half of a player’s golfing score. So to get a good score one needs to practice stroke, alignment, grip, etc. The skill to putt involves training in grip, posture, eye alignment, stance, stroke etc. The word ‘putt’ denotes playing a stroke, usually, on the green but not always. When playing with the putter, the way the ball is stroked and the ball position is important. The putter can be gripped in many ways but it is better not to have the dominant hand. This will aid in smooth stroke by relaxing shoulders, arms and hands.

Not only the grip and ball position should be concentrated on while golf putting. The stance, eye line and body movement should also be taken care of. On the green, the ball is struck with a flat faced club which makes the ball roll along the ground towards the hole until the ball comes to rest in the cup. The putting green is cut very short so that a ball can roll without difficulty over several yards. The direction of growth of the blades of grass often affects the roll of a golf ball and is called the grain.

Putting greens differ in quality. The finest quality greens are closely mowed and are well kept so that the ball rolls smoothly over it. Putting green is termed as a fast one if a light stroke of the ball allows it to roll a long distance, while it is described as slow if a stronger stroke is required to roll the ball to a long distance.

There are different training aids available to refine the golf putting. The Pure Strike Putter, ON-LINE’S UNIQUE mirror system, Putting mats, Uniputt, 2-Thumb putting grip, 2 thumb shorty grip: all these above aids encourages golfers to achieve body alignment for a consistent swing. The putting training aids claim to improve putting in and cultivate a solid putting stroke for fewer putts and lower scores. It also helps in eliminating wrist action in the putting stroke.
