This week sees the start of the Valle Romano Open to be held at Aloha Golf Club in the beautiful surroundings of Marbella. This is the first time that the European PGA Golf Tour has visited the club and being able to see the excitement in the town we don’t think it will be the last.
Andalucia proudly boasts the title of the Costa Del Golf and you don’t have to travel very far to be able to see or play on a course that is worthy of any tour event. The European PGA Golf Tour decided on Aloha as a venue after a little influence from Miguel Angel Jimenez who is a honorary member at Aloha since he won the last major event at the club back in 1985.
Having played Aloha on a number of occasions I can honestly say that it is one of the most challenging courses I have ever played, now seeing the course ready for the guys that hit the fairways and greens it looks more challenging and more awesome than ever!
The entries to the greens have been tightened, the rough has been grown out to be knee high, the greens are like butting on glass and the bunkers are somehow deeper than they were two weeks ago.
There is a massive amount of work that goes into a European PGA Golf Tour Event and this one is no different. I was lucky enough to visit the Volvo Masters at Valderama which is around an hours drive from Aloha and the event is around 10 times the size of the Aloha event but still the same precision is being put into the preparation and management.
The European PGA Golf Tour boasts some of the best players in the world and the Andalucia event has attracted some of the big names, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul Broadhurst, Paul McGinly and Lee Westwood are a few of the names that will probably ring a bell from the Ryder cup winning teams of the past few years.
This is going to be a memorial European PGA Golf Tour Event and I for one can not wait for it to get started.
